Dr. Henry Cabrera’s Lavender Passion Cultivates a Flourishing Business in South Kingston, Rhode Island

After a demanding day as a local anesthesiologist, Dr. Henry Cabrera retreats from his white coat to the serene embrace of Lavender Waves Farm. What began as a simple hobby has flourished into a thriving business and cherished residence. Visitors are drawn to this idyllic sanctuary, where farm animals roam freely, and an outdoor paradise awaits.

In late 2016, Cabrera embarked on a transformative journey when he took over Lavender Waves Farm. His goal was to revitalize the property, blending traditional charm with innovative and sustainable farming practices.

Nestled on 14 acres in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Lavender Waves Farm has become a sanctuary for lavender lovers. With over 4,000 perennial lavender plants of diverse varieties, the farm showcases a stunning display of blooms around a central gazebo, crafting a truly enchanting landscape.

Why Lavender?

Dr. Henry Cabrera shares, “I was attracted by its multiple health benefits, including support for low blood pressure and relief from stress and insomnia,”

At Lavender Waves Farm, harvested lavender is transformed into a variety of products, including essential oils, lotions, and candles, all meticulously crafted and sold.

However, Lavender Waves Farm is not just about lavender. It also shelters around 100 animals, from rare camels and chickens to guinea hens, ducks, geese, a white peacock, alpacas, and a vigilant llama.

A lot of people ask me what I do with the animals,” says Dr. Henry Cabrera. “And quite frankly, I just love the animals.

The farm features a diverse collection of friendly and distinctive breeds, such as Gold-laced Brahma chickens and pilgrim geese, adding to the farm’s unique charm and character.

Restoring Rhode Island’s Agricultural Heritage

Lavender Waves Farm stands on land with a rich agricultural legacy, formerly known as Gatewood Farm, which once specialized in bacon and sausage production. As time passed, the farm was divided and sold off, leading to its decline.

“The property has long-established agricultural roots,” explains Cabrera. “But farming is a tough business. Eventually, the property was subdivided and sold off to subsidize the farming operations throughout the years.”

Upon acquiring the farm, Dr. Henry Cabrera embarked on a journey of restoration and enhancement. He renovated the rundown barn, updated the electricity and water systems, and built new stables. Additionally, he established rotational grazing pastures for livestock and constructed a garage for farm equipment.

“When I was figuring out how to design the whole thing,” Cabrera says. “It just occurred to me to put a gazebo in the middle and then have all the rows of lavender meet right in the center. That’s what we did.”

The farm’s distinctive layout and thoughtful design have created a remarkable space that celebrates both the lavender and the overall visitor experience.

Experiences at Lavender Waves Farm

As June ushers in the blooming of Lavender Waves Farm’s fields, visitors are invited to bask in the tranquil beauty and engage in special events such as lavender yoga. Every Sunday during the summer, guests can join yoga sessions amidst the aromatic lavender, enjoying relaxation and rejuvenation right on the farm.

The peak bloom period at Lavender Waves Farm stretches from mid-June to early August when the farm hosts its popular “Cut Your Own Lavender” event. Guests can wander among 4,000 lavender plants, selecting and cutting their bundles to take home. During this time, Cabrera also offers enlightening talks on the farm’s history, the various lavender types, and effective cutting methods.

Lavender Waves Farm’s Elegant Rustic Retreat

The farm presents an exquisitely rustic one-bedroom suite, perfect for those seeking an immersive lavender experience. Situated atop a converted garage, this suite offers guests stunning views of the blooming lavender fields.

Inside, the suite boasts distinctive features such as amethyst geode sinks in the bathroom, a bespoke coffee table crafted from an 80-year-old wood slab, and an antique wheelbarrow. These rustic touches, complemented by a lavender-inspired color palette, create a warm and welcoming environment.

“I call the farm suite ‘luxuriously rustic,’” Cabrera explains. “I wanted it to be a luxury place yet a rural, rustic place that people could enjoy.”

The Major Support of Henry Cabrera’s Family

While Henry Cabrera is the visionary behind Lavender Waves Farm, he is quick to credit his family for their essential support. “This was not something I created on my own,” he says. “To do it, I’ve had to hire people from the very get-go. I’ve had my family here, and the teamwork aspect has been important.”

Cabrera’s parents played a pivotal role, moving from Miami to assist in establishing the farm. The Cabrera family’s farming heritage traces back to Cuba, where their ancestors managed a farm before being forced to leave due to the Fidel Castro regime.

“I’m sure [farming] is in my blood,” Dr. Cabrera shared on an episode of OnlyGood TV. “My grandfather used to tell me stories about it. I often think ‘where would I be right now?’ if it weren’t for the Castro regime because I would probably be in Cuba, maybe managing some big tobacco plantations.”

Thanks to his family’s bravery and resilience, Dr. Cabrera has thrived in America, becoming both a doctor and a successful lavender farmer.

The Astonishing Growth and Success of Lavender Waves Farm

Lavender Waves Farm has experienced extraordinary growth and success, evolving from a personal passion project into a flourishing enterprise with a loyal following and rave reviews. “The response I’ve received to what I’ve created has exceeded all my expectations,” says Cabrera.
